| The course is 8 hours long,
split into two four hour evening sessions, and
consists of the following segments:
I. Basic Pistol
- Handgun knowledge and safe handling
- Ammunition knowledge
- Fundamentals of shooting
- Code of Iowa Laws Chapter 724
II. First Shots
- Firing positions
- Range safety procedures
- Firing the first shots
III. Exam: Written test
(75% score to pass)
1. Firearms knowledge, fundamentals of handgun shooting, proper use
of ammunition
2. Chapter 724 of the Code of Iowa
IV. Shooting Courses - Exercises
(Shoot 50 rounds learning firearms skills and
marksmanship)
- Shoot from 5 yard line using bench rest position
- Shoot from 5 yard line using the standing position
- Shoot from 9 - 15 - 25 yard lines using standing position
- Practice 6 shots in 8 seconds
V. Qualifying with firearms for
permit to carry
- Students will fire 48 rounds timed at the 5, 9, 15, and 25 yard line.
- A score of 75% is needed to pass
